Survey of human rights audiovisual archiving needs and practices

We are conducting this survey to better understand human rights documenters’ challenges, current practices, and needs for guidance / tools related to archiving and preserving their collections.

The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

WITNESS helps people use video and technology to protect and defend human rights. Archiving is often cited as a challenge for many of the activists we work with and support. Archiving encompasses everything we do after we film to ensure that our videos are appropriately preserved for future use. It can include activities like organizing, storing, and cataloging materials, so that they can be retrieved and used in advocacy, in evidentiary settings, or as preserved documentation of community histories.

We have supported partners on archiving projects such as People's Database for Police Accountability with Berkeley Copwatch, and Policing the Police with El Grito. We have also created sharable guidance, such as our Should I Collect and Archive These Videos? tipsheet, co-created with Texas After Violence Project, and our Activists’ Guide to Archiving Video.

We want our guidance to continue to respond to the needs of activists and community-based human rights practitioners who are creating and collecting videos. To this end, we invite you to take this survey so that we can better understand your archiving questions and challenges, and what materials would be most helpful to you.

We will not share your information with anyone outside of WITNESS without your consent. Please review our Privacy Policy for more information.
